Mon 17 November 2025:

The ANC has dismissed rumours of a plan to remove President Cyril Ramaphosa, insisting he will complete his term.

The African National Congress (ANC) is adamant its leadership will serve its full term, which is set to end in December 2027. This follows reports of a plot to oust President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The plan allegedly circulated in a letter among senior ANC members. It called for Ramaphosa’s removal and the disbandment of the NEC. The letter proposed a national task team led by Thabo Mbeki.

Acting ANC spokesperson Nonceba Mhlauli dismissed the rumours. She stated there is no “departure lounge” in the NEC. Mhlauli affirmed that Ramaphosa will hand over the presidency at the end of his term in 2027.

Speculation suggested Ramaphosa might step down after the G20 presidency handover. However, his advisor Bejani Chauke called these rumours untrue. He said they aimed to undermine the successful G20 summit in Africa.

An early resignation by Ramaphosa could harm the economy. It would create uncertainty ahead of the 2026 municipal elections, a scenario the ANC wants to avoid.
