Sat 27 July 2024:
Survival International has published rare images of the Mashco Piro tribe, the largest uncontacted indigenous group globally. More than 50 Mashco Piro members have recently emerged from the Peruvian Amazon, reportedly seeking food and fleeing the encroachment of logging companies, according to FENAMAD, a local indigenous organization.
❗️ New & extraordinary footage released today show dozens of uncontacted Mashco Piro Indigenous people in the Peruvian Amazon, just a few miles from several logging companies.

“This is irrefutable evidence that many Mashco Piro live in this area, which the government has not only failed to protect but actually sold off to logging companies,” stated FENAMAD president Alfredo Vargas Pio.
The Mashco Piro were photographed in late June near the Brazil border. Survival International highlighted that logging company Maderera Canales Tahuamanu SAC has built extensive roads in the area, posing a severe threat to the tribe through potential violent encounters and the risk of disease transmission.

The Mashco Piro, who number over 750, historically retreated into the jungle to avoid exploitation during the 19th-century rubber boom and have since faced displacement by drug traffickers and illegal loggers. Although the Peruvian government established the Madre de Dios Territorial Reserve in 2002 to protect the tribe, the reserve only covers part of their territory, leaving them vulnerable to logging activities.
