Sun 25 August 2024:

Social media erupted on Sunday as residents from Jeffreys Bay, Gqeberha, George, and other parts of the Eastern and Western Cape reported seeing a meteorite streak across the sky. Pictures and videos of the event quickly circulated online, sparking widespread curiosity.

Loud Bangs and Shaking Reported, But No Earthquake

According to Weather Guru, a Facebook page managed by former South African Weather Service employee Garth Sampson, the mysterious event was not an earthquake, despite initial reports of loud bangs and shaking in areas like Mossel Bay and Great Brak. Instead, it appears a meteor or satellite may have passed over the Patensie area.

Weather Guru said: “My rainfall group in the Langkloof started reporting what sounded like an earthquake. Later reports came through of what seems to look like a meteor or satellite. It apparently hit in the Patensie area.” He said a video had been doing rounds on many groups and was sent to Weather Guru by Tsitsikamaboertjie from Assagaaibosch.

NASA Confirms Asteroids Passing Close to Earth

According to Times of India, NASA announced that five asteroids would pass close to earth between August 27 and September 1. All the asteroids were confirmed as not posing a threat and this will now allow astronomers to study the near-earth objects.

Asteroids are rocky, icy, or debris left over from the formation of Earth some 4.6 billion years ago.
