Turki Al-Sheikh, head of the General Entertainment Authority (GEA), shared highlights of the celebration on social media, including a historic moment where Celine Dion and Jennifer Lopez left their handprints on Riyadh Season’s Wall of Fame.

With its dazzling performances and heartfelt tributes, the event not only honored Elie Saab’s legacy but also cemented Riyadh Season’s status as a global hub of culture and entertainment.

Saudi Arabia and escaping forward

In the past two years, a number of glitzy shows have been hosted in Saudi Arabia, including rapper 50 Cent, South Korean boy band BTS and pop icon Janet Jackson, among others.

These reforms were pushed by Saudi’s de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and have allowed the relaunching of cinemas, concerts, and the lifting of the ban on women driving, as part of his plan to diversify Saudi Arabia’s economy and steer it away from dependence on crude oil.

But critics have said these reforms would anger conservatives in Saudi Arabia and that they have been promoted while the crown prince is silencing opposition to his rule.

Many critics say In Saudi Arabia, the regime preempted social demands by abolishing the religious police or the group for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, as well as imprisoning a large number of scholars and sheikhs, particularly those who denounced the Land of the Two Holy Mosques’ Westernisation under the guise of entertainment.

The entertainment seasons never end, and the country spends vast sums of money on new and shiny pretexts such as openness, liberation, and modernism.

This openness does not include civil rights systems, nor the right to expression, freedom of information, publishing, thought, and political activity, as it is still one of the major sins that leads those who commit them to disappear behind the sun. So the regime chose to neglect and concede a number of ideological constants, such as women’s freedom of dress, mixing, and other things that are considered in the West, for example, as part of basic individual rights, such as women driving a car.
