Tue 14 January 2025:
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Tuesday accused the US of planning to sabotage the TurkStream gas pipeline, which transports energy resources from Russia to Türkiye.
Speaking at a news conference in Moscow, Lavrov alleged Washington is facilitating terrorist attacks on energy infrastructure and claimed there are plans to target TurkStream.
“The US does not tolerate competition in any sphere, including energy. They are recklessly endorsing terrorist activities aimed at undermining the energy stability of the European Union,” Lavrov said.
“They are encouraging their Ukrainian proxies to disable TurkStream following the sabotage of Nord Stream,” he added.
The remarks come a day after Russia’s Defense Ministry said it had downed Ukrainian drones that tried to attack part of the infrastructure of the TurkStream pipeline.

The TurkStream gas pipeline is a major natural gas pipeline that runs from Russia to Turkey beneath the Black Sea. It delivers Russian gas directly to Turkey and several European countries, bypassing Ukraine.
Launched in January 2020, TurkStream is part of Russia’s strategy to maintain its role as a dominant energy supplier to Europe while avoiding reliance on Ukrainian transit routes.
The Ukraine war, which began in February 2022, has significantly impacted energy geopolitics. Western sanctions against Russia and Europe’s efforts to reduce dependency on Russian gas have heightened the importance of alternative routes like TurkStream.
At the same time, the war has spotlighted the risks of relying on Russian energy, prompting Europe to accelerate its transition to renewable energy and diversify gas supplies.
While TurkStream strengthens Russia’s energy leverage, it also underscores the complex dynamics of energy security amid geopolitical tensions. The war has forced Europe to rethink its energy policies, aiming for greater independence from Russia.
