RUSSIA AND CHINA PLAN JOINT MOON STATION IN THREE PHASES

Russia and China have formalized their plans to construct the International Scientific Lunar Station (ISLS) in three stages, according to an official agreement published on the Russian governmental portal. Work on five missions to the Moon has already commenced.

Three-Phase Development Plan

The agreement outlines the three stages: research, creation, and operations. The second stage involves setting up a control center, delivering bulk cargo, and achieving a safe, high-precision soft landing on the Moon’s surface, marking the start of joint operations.

Operational Phase and International Collaboration

The operational phase aims at the “study and exploration of the Moon, verification of technologies, assistance to international partners in landing a man on the Moon with the help of a completed ISLS,” including a potential manned Moon landing.

Joint Missions and International Invitations

Russia and China plan to launch five joint missions to place modules in orbit and on the Moon’s surface. They are inviting international partners to join the lunar station project, with Roscosmos and the Chinese National Space Administration signing separate bilateral agreements for collaboration.

Agreement Duration and Renewal Terms

“This agreement is valid for 20 years. Its validity is automatically extended for subsequent 5-year periods, unless either party notifies the other party in writing through diplomatic channels of its intention to terminate this agreement at least one year before the expiration of the initial validity period or the expiration of any subsequent validity period,” the document states.

The agreement, signed on November 25, 2022, came into effect on July 18.
