RUSSIA: ASSAD REGIME FELL BECAUSE IT REFUSED POWER-SHARING DEAL

Middle East World

Wed 15 January 2025:

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Moscow wants to contribute to efforts to improve the situation in Syria and it is in constant contact with the new Syrian administration and will not leave the Middle East.

His remarks were made during a press conference held yesterday. Lavrov said: “The events in Syria have largely unfolded because of the authorities’ inertia in recent years,” adding, “there were events in Syria, which both the Russian president and other representatives commented on. They happened largely because the past decade […] was marked by a slowdown in the political process. Perhaps there was a reluctance to implement changes.”

Lavrov pointed out that they had “urged the Syrian leadership in every possible way to ensure that the Constitutional Committee, established on Russia’s initiative, resumed its work.”

“However, the leadership in Damascus was not eager to get it back on line and reach some agreements. It was possible to reach an agreement on power-sharing, but they did not want to share power with non-terrorist opposition forces,” he added.

The minister pointed out that the US occupies land in eastern Syria and said that there are oil fields in this region, and that the resources obtained in this region are used to “support separatist elements in northeastern Syria.”

Lavrov also stated they had made an offer to the Kurds in Syria to build a bridge with Damascus during the previous regime’s rule.

“They did not want this; they said there would be Americans, and they would create a quasi-state, and we always tried to explain to them that Turkiye and Iraq would not allow the establishment of a Kurdish state, as we adopted an approach that was in favour of consultation and protecting the rights of the Kurds in Syria, Iraq, Iran and Turkiye. However, Damascus on the one hand and the Kurds on the other, did not want to negotiate,” stated Lavrov.

He stressed that contact with the new administration in Syria would continue, as well as the activities of the Russian embassy in Damascus.
