Tue 02 May 2023:

The White House estimated on Monday that warfare against Ukraine in the Bakhmut region had cost the Russian troops 100,000 lives over the previous five months, Reuters reported.

According to U.S. intelligence assessments, the figure comprised more than 20,000 fatalities, with the Wagner group accounting for half of them, White House national security secretary John Kirby told reporters. He claimed that the Bakhmut offensive had stopped and failed.

“Russia’sattempt at an offensive in the Donbaslargely through Bakhmut has failed,” Kirby said. “Russia has been unable to seize any real strategic and significant territory.”

He claimed that although the Russians had achieved some little progress in Bakhmut, it had cost them “terrible, terrible costs,” and that Ukraine’s fortifications in the area were still robust.

“Russia has exhausted its military stockpiles and its armed forces and since December alone, we estimate that Russia has suffered more than 100,000 casualties, including over 20,000 killed in action, nearly half of whom were Wagner soldiers,” he said.

“It’s really stunning, these numbers,” Kirby added, saying the total is three times the number of American casualties in the Guadalcanal campaign in World War Two.

Another American arms package for Ukraine would shortly be released, according to Kirby.
