South African police said Tuesday that in the last two weeks in Gauteng Province, they have arrested 140 suspects and recovered over 300 unlicensed firearms and 2,800 rounds of ammunition, Xinhua reported.

According to police spokesperson Dimakatso Sello, the unlicensed firearms were recovered in Gauteng Province between October 11 and October 24.

“The police in Gauteng continue to recover unlicensed firearms and ammunition in circulation in a concerted effort to address serious and violent crime. This is the result of routine crime prevention patrols, stop-and-searches and community tip-offs. All the recovered firearms will be subjected to a ballistic test to establish whether it can be linked to other serious crimes committed,” Sello said.

Some of the firearms were recovered from illegal miners, according to the spokesperson, who urges the people to continue supplying information about criminality to the police.
