In case you missed it Most Read News Desk Tech

Wed 28 August 2024:

Smartphones, which often store highly sensitive data, should be equipped with security apps to defend against potential malware, advises Vladislav Tushkanov, Director of Machine Learning Technology at cybersecurity firm Kaspersky.

AI Assistants Pose Privacy Risks, Warns Expert

Tushkanov highlights the risks associated with AI assistants, especially those that operate online. “Online AI assistants should not be trusted with confidential information or in critical situations, as they may provide inaccurate or misleading advice,” he cautioned.

To protect your data, Tushkanov recommends using robust passwords and enabling two-factor authentication. “If these security measures are compromised, sensitive information shared with chatbots could be at risk,” he added.

On-Device Assistants: A Safer Alternative?

While on-device AI assistants address some privacy concerns by not requiring internet access, Tushkanov warns that if these assistants rely on third-party services, they could still pose privacy threats similar to those of built-in smartphone assistants.

Due to the limited hardware of smartphones, on-device AI models might underperform, leading to a higher risk of misinformation and fabricated facts, Tushkanov explained.

Tushkanov advises users to avoid sharing overly personal information with AI-powered apps, especially those designed for emotional support. App providers may use chat data to improve their models, so it’s important to remain cautious.

Use Trusted Apps and Security Solutions

“The most confidential data on our smartphones can be compromised by malicious apps, whether AI-powered or not,” Tushkanov warned. He urged users to only install trusted apps, be mindful of the permissions they grant, and use reliable security solutions to guard against potential malware.
