SA’S EMPLOYMENT RATE UP 0.4 PCT IN Q2

South Africa’s total employment rate rose by 0.4 percent in the second quarter of 2024 on a quarter-on-quarter basis, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) said Thursday.

The statistics agency reported that jobs increased from 10.67 million in the first quarter of this year to 10.72 million by June.

The Stats SA cited the community services industry as a main driving force for job creation, which recorded an increase of 3.1 percent in the second quarter.

Statistician-General of South Africa Risenga Maluleke said a number of sectors saw employment decline during the period, with employment rate of the manufacturing, mining and transport sectors dropping by 1.2 percent, 1.5 percent and 1.4 percent, respectively.

“Full-time employment decreased by 0.4 percentage points quarter-on-quarter, from 9,488,000 in the first quarter to 9,449,000 in the second quarter,” said Maluleke.

According to the Stats SA, part-time employment jumped by 6.8 percent, rising from 1,186,000 in the first quarter to reach 1,267,000 in the second quarter.
