Saudi designer Lujain Abulfaraj has pioneered an educational initiative aimed at making Arabic language learning more engaging for children. Concerned by her son’s lack of interest in Arabic, Abulfaraj sought creative ways to inspire a love for the language, reports the Saudi Press Agency.

In 2015, she enrolled in a design programme focused on the artistic potential of Arabic calligraphy, exploring how it could be used as an educational tool. Recognising the potential to make learning both fun and instructive, she developed a game that uses large, movable Arabic letters for children to arrange and create words.

Building on this concept, Abulfaraj launched her venture in 2020, introducing “Akwan” (Arabic for “universes”), a set of magnetic bricks inspired by Arabic calligraphy. These bricks are designed to make learning interactive and enjoyable for young learners by encouraging creativity in word formation.

At the Riyadh International Book Fair, which kicked off on 26 September, Abulfaraj presented “Akwan”, showcasing its potential to enrich children’s language learning experiences and foster a deeper appreciation for Arabic. She also praised the Ministry of Culture in the Saudi capital for its support of young Saudi talent and efforts to revitalise the country’s cultural heritage, particularly its language.

In recognition of her work, the Ministry of Culture nominated Abulfaraj for the 2023 Cultural Awards in the architecture and design category, where she became one of the top three finalists. Her educational tools also received the “Designed in Saudi” seal.
