Wed 29 March 2023:

Global technology companies have been urged to join the fight against disinformation by eight European nations, Anadolu Agency reported.

“(Tech) Platforms should address the growing threat to democracies posed by deepfakes and other AI-generated disinformation pieces, especially from hostile foreign actors,” said a joint letter from prime ministers of Lithuania, Moldova, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, and Ukraine.

“Foreign information manipulation and interference, including disinformation is being deployed to destabilize our countries, weaken our democracies, to derail Moldova’s and Ukraine’s accession to the European Union and to weaken our support to Ukraine amid Russia’s war of aggression,” said the letter initiated by Moldova.

HOW DEEPFAKE TECHNOLOGY ACTUALLY WORKS

Stating that disinformation is one of the “most important and far-reaching weapons,” of the “hostile actors,” it called on tech platforms to join forces with “democratic governments and civil society and work together to protect the integrity of information and ensure the security of our societies.”

The national leaders ask tech companies to devote more resources to respond to false narratives; to adjust algorithms to prioritize accuracy and truthfulness over engagement; and to clearly mark deepfakes and automated posts, including those produced by artificial intelligence. They also called for more coordinated regulation from governments and better self-policing by tech companies.

The letter was spearheaded by Moldova, a small nation sandwiched between Romania and Ukraine, whose government says that it has been the target of disinformation from Russia because of its support for Kyiv.

President Maia Sandu of Moldova last month accused Russia of inciting violence and of trying to overthrow her government, partly as a way of preventing her country from joining the European Union.
