Following criticism of the company’s most recent controversial policy change, Elon Musk has asked Twitter users to vote on whether he should leave his position as CEO of the social media site.

“Should I step down as head of Twitter? I will abide by the results of this poll,” Musk tweeted on Sunday.

“As the saying goes, be careful what you wish, as you might get it,” Musk added in a later tweet.

Early on Monday morning, about 10.5 million people had voted in the survey, with users voting 56.3-43.7 percent for Musk to go.

Musk conducted his survey after users reacted negatively to Twitter’s statement that it will no longer permit the “free promotion” of other social media networks.

Users will no longer be permitted to post usernames and links to accounts for a number of other social media sites, including Facebook, Instagram, and Mastodon, according to Twitter’s most controversial policy change, which was announced on Sunday.

After suspending more than a dozen journalists who cover Musk last week, this was the most recent in a string of actions taken by Twitter to generate backlash.

Musk has become a lightning rod for debate over free speech, online safety, and the role of social media in democracy since acquiring Twitter for $44 billion in October.

Musk, a self-described free speech absolutist, has promised to broaden the platform’s appeal and address what he sees as the site’s liberal bias.

Musk has been accused by critics of allowing hate speech to flourish on the platform and censoring criticism he does not agree with.
