Tue 13 August 2024:
On Monday, social media platform X became the focal point of complaints across nine EU countries over allegations that artificial intelligence company xAI collected personal data without obtaining user consent.
The Vienna-based non-governmental organization Noyb (None Of Your Business), which specializes in data security, revealed that they have lodged complaints regarding the xAI program in Austria, Belgium, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Poland. The complaints cite breaches of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
According to Noyb, X has been unlawfully utilizing the personal data of over 60 million users in Europe to advance artificial intelligence technologies like Grok, a generative AI chatbot developed by xAI, without securing their consent or providing prior notification.

The Irish Data Protection Commission had already initiated legal proceedings against X last week, aiming to halt the illicit data processing. Noyb explained that their decision to file official complaints in nine countries stemmed from Ireland’s perceived inadequacy in enforcing the GDPR.
Both X and xAI are owned by US entrepreneur Elon Musk, bringing his business operations under scrutiny in the European context.
