Wed 19 November 2025:

A Sri Lankan influencer who boasts a lavish lifestyle on his social media claims to have made his fortune through racist, Islamophobic and anti-migrant posts aimed at British audiences.

Sri Lankan influencer Geeth Sooriyapura has made hundreds of thousands of pounds by flooding British audiences with Facebook ads that push far right anti-immigrant narratives.

In an interview with the Bureau of Investigative Journalism (TBIJ), Sooriyapura said he targets “old people… because they are the ones who don’t like immigrants”.

Sooriyapura calls himself the “Facebook ads king” as he gets paid to teach others the methods behind his controversial success.

An investigation led by TBIJ found that there were 128 Facebook pages and groups that targeted UK audiences with a combined following of 1.6m users – all of which are linked to Sooriyapura and his students.

In March, one of Sooriyapura’s pages posted a false claim spreading misinformation regarding Sadiq Khan’s pledge to build 40,000 new London council homes by saying that they would only be available to Muslims so they could be “near mosques and halal food shops”.

The comments on the post were full of vile Islamophobic abuse directed to Muslims and London Mayor Sadiq Khan, with calls for him to be deported and hung, with others urging that civil war was coming to the UK.

Addressing the widespread misinformation regarding the incident, a spokesperson for Khan said: “Fake and racist content has real world consequences. It can stoke hatred as well as fuel prejudice and division.”

UK politics and social media virality

In a video, Sooriyapura recommended his students to target the UK because the audiences are highly engaged with “strong trigger” topics such as immigration.

He claims that the UK audience is important due to their sensitive trigger nature, as he claims: “They don’t really like people from our countries living there – not just Sri Lankans, but even more so Indians.”

Another post of his turned a photo of African men on an overcrowded boat on the coast of Italy into a racially charged 15-second video targeting British “stop the boats” sentiments, with text reading: “Share if you want Britain to put its OWN PEOPLE before foreigners looking for handouts!”

A lot of the videos shared by him and his students are AI-generated, such as one showing a large naval ship colliding with two dinghies full of people – representing immigrants crossing the Channel to seek asylum in the UK.

The video then showed the immigrants being thrown out of the boats into the sea to their deaths, with a caption reading: “Who really wants to see something like this?”

Sooriyapura labels himself as a “Facebook monetisation expert and coach” and teaches his students to make Facebook pages around many different niches.

Politics, he argued, is the best niche, as the generic patriotic content that spreads misinformation and hate gives content creators the highest chance of going viral.

Sooriyapura and his students make money from Meta’s “in-stream ads” programme which allows advertisers to place adverts before, during, or after videos.

Anti-Labour and Islamophobia

The UK politics pages in Sooriyapura’s network had a strong anti-Labour bias, clearly appealing to right-leaning nationalist audiences.

He shared numerous posts calling for Khan and Prime Minister Keir Starmer to be arrested, or AI generated images of them in prison.

One of these AI-generated posts showed Starmer wearing Islamic clothing with the text reading: “Ostarmer Bin Laden Wanted For Terrorist Crimes Against White Christians Pensioners and the Disabled.”

The posts also expressed sympathy and support for Reform UK and praised its leader Nigel Farage.

The controversial methods that Sooriyapura and his students practice seem to garner significant monetary results, with one of dozens of pages by Sooriyapura earning £1,060 in a month.

Other posts in the groups show AI generated images of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerbeg with a large pile of cash reading: “Thank you very much Mr Zuckerberg for helping people in Sri Lanka”.

The rapid spread of misinformation and Islamophobic anti-immigrant posts on social media like X and Facebook represents a concerning trend in British society, where far-right views are becoming increasingly normalised and mainstreamed at a rapid rate.

Islamophobic hate crimes are at an all-time high, with a 20% increase in the last year ending March 2025.

Now with financial motives behind spreading Islamophobic misinformation, experts fear that these type of pages seeking financial gain will only increase, unless Meta cracks down
