Mon 22 January 2024:
Russia’s Leningrad area, which has a fuel export terminal that was disrupted on Sunday by a fire that Ukrainian media alleged was caused by a Ukrainian drone assault, declared that important infrastructure had been placed on high alert, Reuters reported,
“In all districts of the Leningrad region, a high alert regime has been declared at critical infrastructure facilities,” the regional administration said on Telegram.
“Security units and law enforcement agencies have received orders to destroy Unmanned Aerial Vehicles if they are detected in nearby territories,” it said.
The Interfax-Ukraine news agency, citing unnamed sources, said the fire at the Ust-Luga complex, on the Gulf of Finland about 170 km (110 miles) west of St. Petersburg, was the result of a special operation carried out by Ukraine’s security services.
27 killed in blast at Donetsk market
According to local sources, Ukraine shelled a market on the outskirts of the Russian-occupied city of Donetsk on Sunday, killing at least 27 people and injuring 25
Denis Pushilin, the head of the Moscow-installed authorities in Donetsk, blamed the attack on the suburb of Tekstilshchik on the Ukrainian military.
Pushilin said that the area had been hit by 155mm calibre and 152mm calibre artillery and that the shells had been fired from the direction of Kurakhove and Krasnohorivka to the west.
He announced a day of mourning on Monday.
“These terrorist attacks by the Kyiv regime clearly demonstrate its lack of political will towards achieving peace and the settlement of this conflict by diplomatic means,” Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
There was no immediate comment from Ukraine.
