Due to claims of data breaches and the Chinese government’s involvement in user data tracking, social media platform TikTok has been at the center of numerous controversies. However, a recent survey reveals that it hasn’t affected its appeal in the United States, particularly among young people.

According to the Pew Research Center survey, roughly one-third of TikTok users get their news from the app. The majority of these users were under 30 years old, but the proportion of users between the ages of 30-49 who get their news from TikTok has increased significantly.

At 10% right now, it has increased significantly from 2% in 2020. Additionally, a 3% increase in the population of people aged 50 to 64 is indicative of the growth.

For a social media platform that is well-known for dance videos and other amusing user-generated content, it is a surprising trend. However, given how much time American youth spend online, it now serves as an educational resource for them when it comes to news.

Media organizations like the Los Angeles Times have also made the decision to capitalize on TikTok’s popularity as a news source by announcing their team of reporters who exclusively work on the platform.

“With the goal of meeting new audiences where they are, 404 is ushering in a new era of audience engagement at The Times and rewriting the rulebook for how a ‘paper’ exists online,” the LA Times website claimed.
