On Tuesday, the sun unleashed its most powerful solar flare in seven years, according to an American scientific and regulatory agency.
The Space Weather Prediction Center, part of the American National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), reported on X that this flare ranks as the 17th largest ever recorded.
The center warned that the intense flare might disrupt some radio transmitters and similar technical equipment.
The solar eruption occurred around 1 p.m. Eastern time (1700 GMT) and was classified as an X-class flare, the highest category of solar flares.
Specifically, it was rated an X8.7, indicating it was on the higher end of the X-class scale, which ranges from 1 to 9.
Solar flares are powerful explosions on the sun that can cause radio blackouts lasting from minutes to hours.
They are categorized from class A to class X, with each class further divided from 1 to 9 within its range.
