Mon 17 March 2025:
The Swedish government has decided to ban smartphones in schools.
Swedish Minister of Education Lotta Edholm announced in a press conference that smartphones would be banned in primary and secondary schools nationwide.
Based on scientific research, Edholm stated that students would feel better in class without their phones. She explained that smartphones distract students and negatively affect exam results, which led to the decision.
Edholm mentioned that before entering the classroom, students’ phones would be collected and stored in a locked box, and teachers would place their phones in a designated spot, ensuring they would not use them during class.
The smartphone ban in schools will take effect from July 1, 2026.

Cellphones in schools can have several negative effects on students. First, they are a major distraction. Instead of paying attention in class, students may be texting, browsing social media, or playing games, which reduces their ability to focus and absorb lessons. This leads to lower academic performance.
Second, cellphones can encourage cheating. With easy access to the internet, students may look up answers during tests or share information dishonestly.
Third, excessive cellphone use can harm social skills. Instead of interacting with classmates and teachers, students may become isolated, relying more on virtual communication.
Lastly, phones can be a tool for cyberbullying. Students may use them to spread rumors or harass peers, creating a toxic school environment.
