Tue 09 July 2019:
Syrian opposition fighters and armed groups have launched a military operation against the Assad regime in the Turkmen mountains of northern Latakia. According to reports from the battlefield, the town of Aterrah and 15 minor hills and regime positions have been captured. Additionally, two tanks have been destroyed.
Reports indicate that a great number of regime soldiers have been killed. Regime forces had captured 85 percent of Latakia’s Turkmen mountains in late 2015 with the air backing of Russia. Syria has been locked in a devastating conflict since early 2011, when the Assad regime cracked down on demonstrators with unexpected brutality.
Since then, hundreds of thousands of people have been killed and more than 10 million displaced, according to UN figures.
