Tue 24 September 2024:
A member of the National Security Committee in the Iranian parliament has revealed that Tehran participated in buying the pagers for Lebanon’s Hezbollah which exploded en masse last week.
“Tehran was definitely involved in purchasing these devices,” MP Ahmad Bakhshayesh Ardestani told Didban Iran, “because the Iranian ambassador to Beirut was carrying one of them.” He pointed out that the late Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi used a similar device, and suggested that Raisi’s pager could also have been blown up remotely while he was on the helicopter which crashed and killed all on board.
“Israel has definitely infiltrated the ranks of Hezbollah in Lebanon, after learning about the meetings of its senior leaders, and was able to place explosives in thousands of their communication devices,” said Ardestani. “I personally still disagree with the minister of intelligence who said that there is no trace of foreign infiltration in the assassination [in Tehran] of the head of the Hamas political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, because I am not convinced that it is possible to discover Haniyeh’s place of residence, the floor of his residence in that building, and the time of his presence without a security breach.”
He added that security breaches are “normal” in intelligence services. “Just as we spy on our enemies, they do the same to us. As such, we should not deny the breach, but rather we must close the gaps as much as possible.”
Last week, the Secretary-General of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, acknowledged that the party had been subjected to a major and unprecedented blow on the security and humanitarian levels, but he insisted that the party would pass this test with its heads held high. “The Israeli attacks that targeted pager devices crossed all red lines,” he said, and amounted to a “declaration of war”. Nasrallah added that there is great pressure on hospitals in Lebanon after the recent attacks, noting that the real numbers of victims of the Israeli attacks will emerge with time.

Pagers and walkie-talkies exploded in different parts of Lebanon on Tuesday and Wednesday, wounding more than 4,000 people, and killing 37. The responsibility for the simultaneous explosion of dozens of devices has not yet been determined, although Hezbollah and the Lebanese authorities say that Israel was behind the incident. The occupation state has neither confirmed nor denied responsibility.
There are growing global fears of a major war between Israel and Hezbollah, which could turn into a wider regional conflict and involve other countries.
