Fri 07 June 2024:
Tesla released a software upgrade for its in-car navigation system in China on Friday, adding features such as lane markings on maps that align with actual road lanes.
The company announced the update on its official WeChat account, highlighting that the new features would reduce drivers’ reliance on smartphone apps while driving.
While Tesla did not reveal the provider of the lane-related mapping service, the Shanghai Securities News reported that Baidu is the supplier. Baidu introduced its V20 Baidu Maps in April, naming Tesla and Huawei among its clients. Baidu has been supplying navigation maps to Tesla since 2020.
The V20 Baidu Maps offer lane-level navigation, providing detailed road information and lane recommendations to improve driving safety and experience.
Chinese users have previously criticized Tesla’s in-car navigation maps on social media for lacking detail compared to smartphone maps. Tesla China was not immediately available for comment.
Tesla, which relies solely on cameras for its autonomous driving technology, is working to introduce its ‘Full Self-Driving’ (FSD) software system in China. The company is preparing to register this feature with authorities, according to a recent Reuters report.
In China, navigation maps are widely used to provide traffic information to human drivers, unlike high-definition maps that collect detailed geographic data for autonomous driving vehicles.
