Tue 27 May 2025:

Tesla’s vehicle sales in the European Union dropped sharply by over 50% in April, with Chinese electric and hybrid manufacturers gaining market share, according to data released on Tuesday.

The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) reported that Tesla sold just 5,475 vehicles in April—a 52.6% drop from the same month in 2024. The decline comes as Chinese brands such as BYD increased their presence, eroding Tesla’s early dominance in the EV sector.

Despite an overall 26.4% rise in electric car sales across the EU, Tesla’s market share declined. The company has faced scrutiny due to CEO Elon Musk’s political ties to former President Donald Trump and concerns over its ageing vehicle lineup.

From January to April 2025, Tesla’s sales in the EU have dropped 46.1% year-over-year, totaling 41,677 units. Once the clear leader in EVs, Tesla has now been surpassed by at least 10 competitors, including Volkswagen, BMW, Renault, and BYD, according to market research firm JATO Dynamics.

Globally, Tesla’s first-quarter sales fell 13%, with the company attributing part of the decline to production halts related to upgrades on the Model Y. Musk recently announced plans to scale back his political involvement and said Tesla’s performance was improving.

Meanwhile, Skoda’s Elroq topped April’s EV sales, pushing Tesla’s Model Y—previously a bestseller—to ninth place.

Hybrid vehicles continue to dominate, with sales rising 20.8% since the start of the year, while sales of petrol-only cars dropped 20.6%. Volkswagen remains Europe’s top-selling brand, with a 2.9% sales increase in April.

Chinese automakers have made a significant impact, now holding 7.9% of the EU market. Brands such as BYD, MG, Xpeng, and Leapmotor collectively boosted their electric and hybrid sales by 59% year-over-year. In contrast, other manufacturers saw a 26% increase.
