Several factors contribute to this downturn, with CEO Elon Musk’s political activities playing a significant role alongside market and operational challenges.
Musk’s increasing involvement in politics, particularly his alignment with far-right movements in Europe and his role in U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, has sparked widespread backlash.
In Europe, Musk has vocally supported Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, including speaking at their rallies and posting extensively on X, his social media platform, to promote their agenda. His comments, such as urging Germans to move beyond “past guilt” over Nazi history just before the 80th anniversary of Auschwitz’s liberation, have provoked outrage.
This has led to protests, vandalism of Tesla dealerships, and boycott calls across countries like Germany, France, Sweden, and the UK. For instance, in Germany, Tesla’s sales dropped 76% in February, and a survey indicated 94% of 100,000 respondents would no longer buy a Tesla. In the UK, anti-Musk ads and campaigns like “Everybody Hates Elon” have emerged, correlating with a 12% sales drop in January.
