THOUSANDS LEFT WITHOUT POWER AS STORM ISHA BATTERS UK

News Desk World

Mon 22 January 2024:

Storm Isha caused travel disruptions on Monday, leaving tens of thousands of people without power in the UK and Ireland due to its strong winds and heavy rain.

Northeast England had gusts as high as 99 mph (159 kph) as the entire United Kingdom was under a weather alert for the country’s eighth named storm since September.

Isha follows Storm Henk, which crashed into the UK earlier this month, causing widespread flooding and disruption to train services and roads.

Climatologists say climate change is causing winters in the region to be warmer and wetter, increasing the likelihood of extreme weather events.

In Ireland, which was hit badly by Isha, at least 235,000 homes endured power cuts, according to energy provider ESB.

While thousands of households lost power in northwest England and Wales, another 45,000 individuals in Northern Ireland did not have access to electricity.

Major roads in Scotland were stopped by felled trees, and all Monday morning rush-hour trains nationwide were canceled due to debris and floods.

Britain’s weather agency, the Met Office, said the storm was expected to move away throughout the day.

Many planes were diverted when they were unable to land due to strong winds, resulting in dozens of flights being delayed or canceled late on Sunday.

One Ryanair flight from Manchester to Dublin landed in Paris, and another from the Canary Islands to the Irish capital was diverted to Bordeaux after its original landing attempt failed.

Numerous schools in the Scottish Highlands were closed on Monday due to the persistent presence of multiple flood warnings.
