Mon 08 July 2024:

Thousands of people began a 100-kilometer (62-mile) march from Nezuk to Srebrenica on Monday to commemorate the 1995 genocide in the Bosnian town. This annual march retraces the route taken by survivors of the massacre, in which Bosnian Serb forces killed 8,000 Muslim men and boys on July 11, 1995.

Fatima Ibrahimbegovic Alic, whose father was killed trying to escape, joined the march, saying, “I don’t feel well, but I go for him, for all of them, to walk this path where they suffered. We need to keep doing this so we never forget.”

The atrocity, deemed genocide by two international courts, is commemorated by marchers carrying Bosnian, Palestinian, and Turkish flags. They will stop at mass grave sites along the way and reach the memorial center in Potocari, where nearly 7,000 victims are buried, on Wednesday. A ceremony marking the 29th anniversary of the genocide will be held the following day.
