THREE QUARTERS OF PEOPLE IN GLOBAL SURVEY WANT SINGLE-USE PLASTICS BANNED, GLOBAL SURVEY FINDS

Over 75% people in the world want ban on single-use plastics as quickly as possible, found a global survey on Tuesday.

This comes as the members of the United Nations put together to begin talks on a world treaty to rein in plastic air pollution.

 The share of individuals, who are seeking ban has gone up from 71% since 2019. The people, who favoured merchandise with much less plastic packaging has increased to 82% from 75%.

More than 20,000 people in 28 nations participated in the IPSOS ballot.

“Individuals worldwide have made their views clear. The onus and alternative are now on governments to undertake a world plastics treaty … so we are able to remove plastic air pollution,” said Marco Lambertini, WWF Worldwide’s director basic.  

A treaty was backed by about 90% of those polled. But only time will tell if an agreement can be reached about waste collection, recycling, and other issues. It may also put restrictions on the production and use of certain plastics.

According to the IPSOS poll, 85 percent of global respondents want producers and retailers to be held accountable for reducing, reusing, and recycling plastic packaging. This is an increase from the previous figure of 80%.

Latin American and BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) countries show the highest levels of agreement with banning single-use plastic, at 88% and 80% respectively, while North America has the lowest levels of agreement at 61%.

The highest levels of agreement with banning single-use plastics are seen in Colombia (89%), Chile and Mexico (both 88%), and Argentina and China (both 84%), and the lowest levels in Japan (37%), the United States (55%) and Canada (66%).

The study was conducted among 20,513 adults under the age of 75 across 28 countries on Ipsos’s Global Advisor online platform.
