Sun 14 November 2021:
Three snow leopards at the Lincoln Children’s Zoo in the US state of Nebraska, have died of complications from Covid-19, zoo officials announced Friday.
“It is with deep sadness that we inform our community that three snow leopards at the Lincoln Children’s Zoo have passed away due to complications of COVID-19,” a statement released on the zoo’s official Facebook page said.
On October 13, three snow leopards named Ranney, Everest, and Makalu tested positive for COVID-19, along with two Sumatran tigers named Axl and Kumar, who have subsequently recovered from the disease.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) previously said that humans can transmit COVID-19 to animals, particularly if the animals come into close contact with infected individuals.
Despite warnings that the sickness affects animals at zoos and sanctuaries, the Lincoln Children’s Zoo said it was taking every efforts to prevent the virus from spreading to humans and animals
The zoo remains open “and continues to take every precaution to prevent the spread of COVID-19 to humans and animals,” it said on Facebook.
Denmark opted last year to slaughter its entire mink population of up to 17 million to prevent the virus from evolving, despite claims that it can easily travel between animals. Finland declared on September 30 that it would be the first country in the European Union to vaccine minks at fur farms against COVID-19.
Several countries reported finding minks in farms with positive COVID-19 cases.
Earlier this week, Singapore wildlife park Officials announced Wednesday that four lions have tested positive for the coronavirus after coming into touch with infected zookeepers. Symptoms include coughing and sneezing.
