Sun 02 June 2024:

TikTok, which is facing a potential nationwide ban in the US, refuted claims that it is creating a separate US-only algorithm to circumvent the ban.

A media report had suggested that TikTok was developing a distinct recommendation algorithm, independent of Douyin, the Chinese version operated by ByteDance.

“The Reuters story published today is misleading and factually inaccurate,” TikTok said in a post on X social media platform.

The company said that as per its court filing, “the qualified divestiture demanded by the Act to allow TikTok to continue operating in the United States is simply not possible: not commercially, not technologically, not legally”.

“And certainly not on the 270-day timeline required by the Act,” TikTok added.

TikTok and ByteDance have filed a legal challenge against the US government over the law mandating ByteDance to sell TikTok or face a ban. Last month, President Joe Biden signed a bill into law requiring ByteDance to divest TikTok to a non-Chinese buyer within 270 days, with a possible 90-day extension if deemed necessary.
