Don’t cover up the sexual violence incident committed by the U.S. military in Okinawa! Women stand in anger in front of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Wed 24 July 2024:

The Tokyo metropolitan government was unaware of at least three sexual crimes committed by individuals associated with the U.S. military from 2021 to 2023, according to a report by Japanese daily Mainichi Shimbun on Wednesday.

Inquiry Reveals Overlooked Cases

The revelation surfaced following inquiries by the Mainichi Shimbun to Tokyo’s metropolitan police department and government. These cases, exposed in 2021, 2022, and 2023, involved accusations of sexual intercourse without consent and other charges. The suspects were linked to the U.S. military, including service members, civilian employees, and their families, according to police sources.

The report highlighted that the central government did not inform the Tokyo Metropolitan Government about these sexual crimes. Typically, if the Defense Ministry notifies the metropolitan government of crimes involving U.S. military associates, the metropolitan government would announce on its website that it has requested the U.S. military to take preventive measures.

Previous Announcements Omitted Sexual Crimes

Between 2021 and 2023, the metropolitan government made announcements on five cases involving property damage caused by drunken driving and other incidents but excluded any mention of sexual crimes.

In June, it was revealed that Okinawa Prefectural Police had not announced arrests of U.S. military personnel for sexual assault cases in December 2023 and May 2024. The Japanese government, aware of these cases, did not share the information with the Okinawa Prefectural Government.

Following these revelations, the Japanese government reviewed information-sharing arrangements with local governments and pledged to notify municipalities of any crimes allegedly committed by U.S. military members “without exception.”
