Sat 28 September 2024:
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened legal action against Google, accusing the tech giant of manipulating its search algorithms to benefit Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming election. Trump made the accusation in a post on Truth Social, claiming that Google’s search results prioritize negative coverage of him while promoting favorable stories about Harris.
Accusations of “Illegal” Search Manipulation
Without citing any specific laws, Trump warned that if he wins the 2024 election, he will push the U.S. Department of Justice to prosecute Google for what he called “blatant interference” in the electoral process. He described the alleged manipulation as “illegal activity” and vowed to seek maximum prosecution if he returns to the White House.

Study Sparks Trump’s Accusations
Trump’s remarks seem to be based on a study by the conservative Media Research Center, which claims that Google’s search results unfairly favor Harris. The study, conducted on September 6, 2024, focused on the search term “Donald Trump presidential race 2024” and found that the “Top Stories” section highlighted articles from left-leaning outlets, such as The New York Times and Politico, before linking to Trump’s campaign website.
Google Denies Allegations
Google has firmly denied these claims. A spokesperson for the company, who remained anonymous, stated that search results are based on constantly evolving web content and are not manipulated to favor any candidate. They added that the Media Research Center’s study was based on a single search term on a specific day and that both Trump and Harris’s campaign websites appeared in top search results.Trump’s accusations reflect ongoing concerns from conservatives over perceived bias in big tech platforms. While he has targeted Google in this instance, broader concerns about the influence of tech companies on elections have become a recurring theme in U.S. politics. If Trump returns to office, his threat to prosecute Google signals a continuation of the tension between Silicon Valley and conservative politicians.
