The Trump administration has urged Romanian authorities to remove travel restrictions on controversial influencer Andrew Tate, who faces criminal charges in Bucharest, Financial Times reported
Andrew and his brother, Tristan Tate—both dual citizens of the US and UK—became prominent figures in right-wing social media circles after their 2022 arrest in Romania. They have been charged with human trafficking, sexual misconduct, money laundering, and leading an organized crime group. Both deny any wrongdoing.

According to sources familiar with the matter, US officials initially raised the issue with Romania in a phone call last week. This was followed by Trump’s special envoy, Richard Grenell, discussing the matter with Romania’s foreign minister, Emil Hurezeanu, at the Munich Security Conference. Hurezeanu declined to comment on the exchange, while his spokesperson stated that Romanian courts operate independently and follow due process. Grenell, for his part, denied any substantial discussion with Hurezeanu.
The Tate brothers have amassed millions of followers in the “manosphere,” an online space that promotes male superiority and rejects feminism. Their influence has played a role in right-wing political movements, including Trump’s reelection efforts. Trump ally Tucker Carlson has interviewed them, urging his audience to form their own opinions on the brothers.
Tristan Tate previously boasted on social media about their political impact, claiming that millions of young men in Europe and the US have embraced right-wing views due to Andrew Tate’s online presence.
