After more than two hours, the call between Trump and Putin is over, according to Russian state media.
The Russian president described the talks as “substantive, candid and very useful,” the RIA Novosti news agency said.
He also “expressed gratitude to Trump for the US role in resuming direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine”, it added.
In remarks carried by Russia’s state-run RIA Novosti, Putin said he supports stopping the fighting, but that there is a need to “develop the most effective paths towards peace”.
The Russian president also said his country is ready to work with Ukraine on a memorandum that establishes a ceasefire, stressing the need for compromises that are “acceptable to all sides”.

Trump says Russia and Ukraine will ‘immediately’ start talks
The US president says his call with his Ukrainian counterpart “very well”.
“Russia and Ukraine will immediately start negotiations toward a Ceasefire and, more importantly, an END to the War,” Trump said in a social media post. “The conditions for that will be negotiated between the two parties, as it can only be, because they know details of a negotiation that nobody else would be aware of.”
In a statement issued just before Trump and Putin got on the phone, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov says efforts to end the war would be “painstaking”.
“In some areas, it may be a long process,” Peskov was quoted by state media as saying. “The settlement involves a large number of nuances that need to be discussed.”
He added that Russia is ready to work on resolving the challenges.
