Thu 21 October 2021:
Former President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he is creating a new media company with its own social media platform, nine months after being banned from social media for his role in encouraging the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection.
He and his advisers have since hinted that they were planning to create a rival social media site.
Earlier this year, he launched From the Desk of Donald J Trump, which was often referred to as a blog.
The website was permanently shut down less than a month after it launched. His senior aide Jason Miller said it was “just auxiliary to the broader efforts we have and are working on”.
Trump claims that his goal in founding the Trump Media & Technology Group and its “TRUTH Social” app is to build a competitor to the Big Tech corporations that have refused to work with him and denied him the megaphone that was crucial to his national rise.
“We live in a world where the Taliban has a huge presence on Twitter, yet your favorite American President has been silenced,” he said in a statement. “This is unacceptable.”
“Everyone asks me why doesn’t someone stand up to Big Tech? Well, we will be soon!” he added.
Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), which he chairs, also intends to launch a subscription video-on-demand service.
The company claims it is developing a video-on-demand service that will contain entertainment content, news, and podcasts, in addition to the app, which is slated to soft-launch next month with a statewide rollout early next year.
