TRUSS IS CONSERVATIVES’ FAVORITE BEFORE SECOND DEBATE: POLL

News Desk World

Tue 27 July 2022:

British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss and former Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak will clash on television for the second time in 24 hours as they vie for Conservative Party leadership and, with it, the job of Prime Minister.

A snap poll by Opinium, based on a sample of 1,032 voters, found 39% believed Sunak had performed best compared to 38% for Truss, but crucially Tory voters split 47% to 38% in favour of the foreign secretary.

With postal ballots set to arrive on Tory members’ doorsteps by August 5, Sunak needs good performances in the debates and the early hustings.

Opinion polls and member surveys have suggested that he trails Truss in the battle to win the votes of card-carrying Conservatives, with the foreign secretary the bookmakers’ favourite to be elected as Tory leader on September 5.

The two hopefuls to head the Tory party clashed already on Monday, primarily about their economic plans. The two will now face each other again in a TalkTV/Sun event at 6pm (1700 GMT), with both sides hoping to learn tactical lessons from the BBC clash the night before.

That showdown saw the two rivals trash each other’s economic plans, while personal attacks continued, with Sunak accused by allies of Truss of “mansplaining” during the debate.
