Mon 02 September 2024:
Turkey has officially applied to join the BRICS group of emerging-market nations, aiming to strengthen its global influence and build ties beyond its traditional Western allies, according to sources familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reported. This move signals President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s recognition that the global geopolitical focus is shifting away from developed economies.
Balancing East and West: Turkey’s Strategic Bid Amidst NATO Tensions
Turkey’s application to join BRICS comes amid frustration with its stalled bid to join the European Union and growing rifts with NATO members over its close ties with Russia following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Erdogan’s administration views BRICS membership as a way to navigate the complexities of a multipolar world while maintaining its commitments as a NATO member.
Speaking in Istanbul, Erdogan emphasized that “Turkey can become a strong, prosperous, prestigious and effective country if it improves its relations with the East and the West simultaneously,” Erdogan said in Istanbul over the weekend. “Any method other than this will not benefit Turkey, but will harm it.”

BRICS Expansion and Turkey’s Role in the Changing Global Order
The BRICS group, consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, recently expanded to include Iran, the UAE, Ethiopia, and Egypt, with Saudi Arabia also invited. Turkey’s potential membership, along with other interested nations like Malaysia, Thailand, and Azerbaijan, could be discussed at the upcoming BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia.
Erdogan’s ruling Justice and Development Party has long accused Western nations of obstructing Turkey’s aspirations for a self-sufficient defense industry and a strong economy. Erdogan has also called for a reform of the United Nations Security Council and has shown interest in joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, established by Russia and China as a counterweight to NATO. Turkey’s BRICS bid is a clear step towards realizing these ambitions.
