Middle East World

Sat 10 August 2024:

Washington is poised to allocate $3.5 billion to Israel for the procurement of U.S. weapons and military equipment, a decision reported by CNN on Friday after sources familiar with the situation confirmed the release of funds that had been appropriated months earlier by Congress.

Late Thursday night, the State Department informed lawmakers of its intention to disburse this substantial amount as part of the $14.1 billion supplemental funding bill for Israel that was passed in April.

No Comment from State Department

As of Friday, the State Department had not issued any comments regarding the release of the funds. This action comes at a time of heightened tensions in the Middle East, particularly amidst fears of an expanding conflict in Gaza, where the ongoing war has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and triggered a severe humanitarian crisis.

The situation is further complicated by escalating risks of a broader regional conflict, particularly following the recent assassinations of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran and Hezbollah military commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut, both of whom have prompted threats of retaliation against Israel.
