Fri 17 June 2022:
The extradition of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to the United States to face criminal charges was approved by British interior minister Priti Patel on Friday, putting his long-running legal struggle to a conclusion.
WikiLeaks’ revelation of massive troves of sensitive US military records and diplomatic cables, which they said put lives in danger, has led to Assange’s arrest on 18 charges, including a spying accusation.
His supporters argue that he is an anti-establishment hero who has been victimized because he exposed US wrongdoing in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, and that his trial is a politically motivated attack on free speech and journalism.
“On 17 June, following consideration by both the Magistrates Court and High Court, the extradition of Mr Julian Assange to the US was ordered. Mr Assange retains the normal 14-day right to appeal,” the Home Office said in a statement.
Patel’s decision does not mean the end of Australian-born Assange‘s legal battle which has been going on for more than a decade.
He can file an appeal at London’s High Court, which must approve a challenge before it can proceed. He has the option of taking his case to the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. However, if Assange’s appeal is denied, he must be extradited within 28 days.
