Fri 10 January 2025:

The Met Office on Thursday issued fresh snow and ice warnings as temperatures across the UK are expected to plummet to as low as -16C in some areas.

The cold snap is set to bring hazardous conditions, with several regions on high alert.

A yellow warning for snow and ice remains in effect for northern Scotland until midnight on Thursday.

The Met Office has cautioned residents in these regions to expect icy roads and reduced visibility, urging caution for commuters and travelers.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Steve Willington highlighted the impact of the icy blast in southwestern England, where sleet and snow are forecast to blanket areas including Devon, Cornwall, Dorset, and Somerset.

“With low temperatures persisting, sleet or snow will fall to low levels through Wednesday afternoon and evening,” he said.

Manchester Airport was forced to temporarily close both its runways due to “significant levels of snow” early Wednesday morning.

In a statement, the airport confirmed that teams are working diligently to clear the runways “as quickly as possible.” Passengers are advised to check directly with their airlines for updated flight information.
