Mon 06 December 2021:

On Sunday, health officials in the United Kingdom confirmed that 86 more cases of Omicron Covid had been reported in the country. This brings the total number of cases in the United Kingdom to 246.

On Saturday, however, there were 160 Omicron cases, an increase of more than 50% in one day, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

Meanwhile, the UK has recorded 43,992 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of cases to 10,464,389, according to official figures.

Another 54 deaths caused by the Coronavirus have been reported in the country, bringing the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths in the UK to 145,605. Only those who died within 28 days of their first positive test are included in these figures.

International arrivals to the UK, including children over the age of 12, will be required to take a pre-departure test beginning at 0400 GMT on Tuesday, according to British Health Secretary Sajid Javid. He also stated that the test must be completed no later than 48 hours prior to departure.

Nigeria, along with several other southern African countries, will be added to the red travel list beginning Monday. Following the discovery of the Omicron variant in South Africa late last month, these countries were placed on the red travel list.

“I think it’s too late to make a material difference to the course of the Omicron wave if we’re going to have one,” professor Mark Woolhouse, a member of the Scientific Pandemic Influenza Group on Modelling (Spi-M), told the BBC when asked about the new travel rules.

According to the latest figures, nearly 88 percent of people over the age of 12 in the UK have received their first dose of vaccine, and nearly 81 percent have received both doses.

A booster shot, or the third dose of a coronavirus vaccine, was also received by over 35% of respondents.
