Fri 13 September 2024:
According to a report by The Guardian, the UK has quietly agreed to allow Ukraine to use British-supplied Storm Shadow missiles for long-range attacks deep into Russian territory. This decision marks a significant shift in UK policy, although no formal public announcement is expected.
Citing unnamed officials, the report suggests that the UK has made this decision discreetly, reflecting ongoing discussions between Ukraine and its Western allies about loosening restrictions on long-range weapon use. While no public statement is anticipated, the move could greatly enhance Ukraine’s ability to target Russian positions.
Ukraine Pushes for More Freedom in Using Long-Range Weapons
Kyiv has long argued that restrictions on its use of long-range weapons hinder its defense efforts and its ability to reclaim territory from Russian forces. The change in the UK’s stance may signal growing support for Ukraine’s demands, though concerns remain about potential escalation of the conflict.
Despite Ukraine’s calls for broader long-range capabilities, the US has been cautious, wary of escalating the war by allowing strikes deep inside Russian borders. During a joint press conference in Kyiv, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy avoided addressing any specific changes in US policy, with Blinken only stating that the US has adjusted its strategy “from day one.”

Storm Shadow Missiles and Iran’s Arms to Russia Add Urgency
The timing of the UK and US diplomatic visit to Kyiv follows Washington’s confirmation that Iran has delivered ballistic missiles to Russia, further complicating the conflict. Blinken emphasized that the new arms supply enhances Russia’s “capability and flexibility” in its war efforts, underscoring the strategic importance of Western military aid to Ukraine.
While Blinken did not confirm any shift in US policy regarding long-range strikes, the Guardian report suggests that an agreement on Storm Shadow missiles might have already been reached behind the scenes. UK officials speculate that the visit by top US and UK diplomats to Kyiv wouldn’t have occurred without some understanding on expanding Ukraine’s military capabilities.
