Thu 18 July 2024:
Ukraine has delivered 1,000 tonnes of wheat flour to the Palestinian Territories, in the first shipment under an initiative to combat famine across the developing world.
In an announcement on his Telegram channel today, Andriy Yermak, Ukraine’s Head of the Office of the President, revealed that a ship carrying 1,000 tonnes of wheat flour has arrived in Jordan from Turkiye, to be distributed to the Palestinian Territories.
“The Grain from Ukraine initiative by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in conjunction with the WFP [World Food Program], has sent the first of three shipments to Palestine, which will provide food relief to over 100,000 families caught in the middle of the Israel-Hamas conflict,” Yermak stated.

The ‘Grain from Ukraine’ program is an initiative launched by the embattled eastern European country’s President in November 2022, to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor, the Soviet Union’s infamous starvation of millions of Ukrainians during the 1930s. The initiative aims to provide Ukrainian grain to at least 5 million people across developing and under-developed nations, in an effort to prevent mass famine.
Noting that today’s shipment is the first such delivery to Palestine under that initiative, Yermak highlighted Kyiv’s commitment to providing essential assistance to civilians living through humanitarian crises and food shortages.
“Ukraine has always been and will continue to be a donor of food security for the entire world,” he stated. “Since the program’s inception, Ukraine has supplied essential food products to many countries, including Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya and Yemen. Food security is an important point in the Peace Formula, and I urge all countries to join our collective efforts to achieve it.”
The head of the Ukrainian President’s office also referred to further shipments planned throughout the coming months, saying that “Ukraine plans to deliver more than 7,000 tonnes of wheat flour to Gaza under the initiative, with support from donors, including Norway, Austria, Estonia, France and Iceland.”
Since Israel launched its offensive on the Gaza Strip last October, and has carried out numerous war crimes in the Territory over the past nine months, Ukraine has repeatedly expressed and maintained its support for Tel Aviv, confusing many who compare the Israeli invasion to Russia’s own invasion of Ukraine – a contradiction even highlighted by some in the West, including Norway.
Despite that stance, Kyiv has constantly highlighted the need for aid to be provided to Gaza’s civilian population and expressed his willingness to help in that assistance.
