Fri 09 February 2024:
The Kremlin said on Friday that it did not believe that a change at the top of Ukraine’s military leadership would alter the outcome of what Russia calls its special military operation in Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Thursday saidhe had replaced the country’s outgoing armed forces commander General Valeriy Zaluzhnyi with Colonel-General Oleksandr Syrskyi.
‘Hero of Ukraine’
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy named former army chief General Valeriy Zaluzhnyi a “Hero of Ukraine” on Friday, a day after he was replaced in the biggest shakeup of the war with Russia to date.
Zaluzhnyi, a popular figure who oversaw Ukraine’s war effort throughout the Russian invasion, was replaced by ground forces commander Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi on Thursday.
Polls have indicated that Zaluzhnyi commands a larger share of the public’s trust than Zelenskiy. There is no hard data yet on the public response to his removal but many Ukrainians have openly questioned his sacking on social media.
Ukraine must change ‘methods’ of war
The Ukrainian army needs to change its “methods” to win the war against Russia, Kyiv’s new commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrsky said Friday in his first comments in the role.
The veteran general faces a myriad of problems in his in-tray, not least of which a 1,000-kilometre (600 mile) deadlocked frontline that has barely moved in over a year of fighting.
“Only changes and continuous improvement in the means and methods of warfare will allow us to succeed on this path,” Syrsky said in a social media post.
The army needs “clear and detailed planning”, he said, “taking into account the needs of the frontline for the latest weapons supplied by international partners”.
