Tue 28 December 2021:
According to a recent Opinium poll commissioned by The Guardian newspaper, the UK Labour Party has a seven-point lead over the current Conservative Party in vote intention, as Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s popularity continues to decline.
According to the survey, which was conducted between December 15 and 22, 39 percent of those polled planned to vote Labour if elections were held today, while 32 percent planned to vote Tory.
Things appear to be getting worse for the Conservatives if the incumbent prime minister challenges Labour leader Keir Starmer, with the opposition party’s advantage increasing to 12 points (41 percent to 29 percent ).
According to the survey, current Finance Minister Rishi Sunak has the best chance of closing the gap – 3 points – because Foreign Minister Liz Truss and housing and communities secretary Michael Gove would score much worse than Johnson – 16 and 18 points lower, respectively.
Other recent polls have also suggested that Johnson is losing public support as a result of a series of controversies surrounding the refurbishment of his official residence in Downing Street, reports of government personnel lockdown, and fresh criticism for his management of the epidemic.
The poor polling for Johnson, which also includes a poll commissioned by the Sunday Times showing on Sunday Labour surging to an eight-point lead over the Tories, comes after a torrid period of sleaze scandals for Johnson and his party.
