Sat 27 August 2022:

In the midst of clashes between opposing militias in the Libyan capital, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) called for an end to hostilities on Saturday, Anadolu Agency reported.

The clashes that shook several neighborhoods in the capital resulted in at least one civilian being killed and another injured.

In a statement, UNSMIL said it “is deeply concerned about ongoing armed clashes, including indiscriminate medium and heavy shelling in civilian-populated neighborhoods in Tripoli.”

UNSMIL called “for an immediate cessation of hostilities” and reminded “all parties of their obligations under international human rights and humanitarian law to protect civilians and civilian objects.”

The conflict erupted as military preparations were made by both Fathi Bashagha’s supporters and those of Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh of Tripoli, who was appointed by the parliament in Tobruk to that position in March. Both men are vying for control of the capital.

Libya has remained in turmoil since 2011 when longtime ruler Muammar Gaddafi was ousted after four decades in power.
