Fri 22 April 2022:
The Kremlin announced on Friday that Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in Russia next week.
The declaration came on the 58th day of Moscow’s military campaign in Ukraine, which has resulted in thousands of deaths and over 12 million people displaced in Europe’s biggest refugee crisis since WWII.
“On Tuesday, April 26, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres will arrive in Moscow for talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. He will also be received by Russian President Vladimir Putin,” the spokesman said.
“He will also be received by Russian President Vladimir Putin.”
A UN spokesman said Wednesday that Guterres had asked to meet with the presidents of Russia and Ukraine.
“The Secretary-General said, at this time of great peril and consequence, he would like to discuss urgent steps to bring about peace in Ukraine and the future of multilateralism based on the Charter of the United Nations and international law,” said Mr. Dujarric.
“He noted that both Ukraine and the Russian Federation are founding members of the United Nations and have always been strong supporters of this Organization.”
Since the UN leader claimed that Russia’s military campaign breached the UN charter, Putin has not returned Guterres’ calls or had any contact with him.
Michelle Bachelet, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, stated on Friday that Russian activities in Ukraine might be considered war crimes.
