Fri 12 July 2024:
The world’s population is projected to grow by over 2 billion people in the coming decades, reaching a peak of around 10.3 billion in the 2080s, according to a United Nations report released on Thursday. The “World Population Prospects 2024” report, issued on World Population Day, anticipates a subsequent decline to approximately 10.2 billion by the century’s end.
The earlier-than-expected peak in global population is attributed to factors such as declining fertility rates in some of the world’s largest countries, particularly China, whose population is forecasted to decrease significantly from 1.4 billion in 2024 to 633 million by 2100.

The report highlights that, on average, women worldwide are having one fewer child compared to 1990. In over half of all countries and territories, the average number of live births per woman is below the replacement level of 2.1, necessary to maintain a stable population without migration.
Nearly 20% of the global population, including countries like China, Italy, South Korea, and Spain, have “ultra-low” fertility rates, with women having fewer than 1.4 live births, according to the U.N. Population Division.
U.N. Undersecretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Li Junhua described the earlier and lower peak as “a hopeful sign,” suggesting it could alleviate environmental pressures through reduced aggregate consumption. However, Li emphasized the ongoing need for individuals to lessen their environmental impact.
The report also noted that the population in 63 countries and territories, including China, Germany, Japan, and Russia, has already peaked in 2024 and is expected to decline by 14% over the next 30 years. Additionally, in 48 countries and territories, such as Brazil, Iran, Turkey, and Vietnam, the population is projected to peak between 2025 and 2054.
