Fri 18 April 2025:
The U.S. has begun withdrawing hundreds of troops from northeastern Syria, adapting to the evolving security landscape following President Bashar al-Assad’s ousting in December, New York Times reported.
The military is closing three of its eight small bases in the region—M.S.S. Green Village, M.S.S. Euphrates, and a smaller site—reducing troop numbers from 2,000 to about 1,400, according to two senior U.S. officials. After 60 days, commanders will evaluate further reductions, with a recommended minimum of 500 troops.
President Trump, skeptical of maintaining any U.S. presence, approved the initial drawdown based on commanders’ advice, with Pentagon and Central Command oversight.

A significant development occurred last month when the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (S.D.F.), which controls northeastern Syria, agreed to merge with the new Syrian government, integrating civil and military institutions, including oil and gas fields, by year-end.
Since the rebel coalition led by Ahmed al-Shara assumed power in December, the government has worked to unify Syria’s fragmented rebel groups, with the Kurdish forces proving particularly difficult to integrate. For years, the S.D.F. has been the U.S.’s primary ally against the Islamic State, securing significant territory and establishing a de facto state in the northeast amid Syria’s ongoing instability.
