Fri 17 May 2024:
Pope Francis has described his conservative critics within the Roman Catholic Church in the United States as having a “suicidal attitude,” according to an upcoming CBS interview, Reuters reported.
In the “60 Minutes” interview set to air this Sunday, Pope Francis addressed the conservative backlash against his papacy, noting that many of his critics are American clergy members.
Pope Francis responded by saying a conservative is someone who “clings to something and does not want to see beyond that.”
“It is a suicidal attitude,” the pontiff said, according to a brief transcript excerpt made available by CBS Thursday.
“Because one thing is to take tradition into account, to consider situations from the past, but quite another is to be closed up inside a dogmatic box.”
Since his election as head of the church in 2013, Pope Francis has frequently clashed with the conservative faction.
Conservatives have opposed several of his initiatives, including efforts to make the church more inclusive of the LGBT community and to increase the involvement of laypeople.
Last year, Pope Francis dismissed a conservative U.S. bishop who was a harsh critic of his papacy and labeled the conservative faction in the U.S. church as “reactionary.” He also stripped a conservative American cardinal of certain Vatican privileges.
